Why people travel to Campillos
Campillos sits on the plain north-west of Málaga, in the Guadalteba district, well away from the coast. It's a working agricultural town of cereal fields and olive groves rather than a resort, and most visitors are here for a reason. The Reserva Natural Lagunas de Campillos, a cluster of endorheic lagoons, draws birdwatchers who come for flamingos, cranes and other waterfowl, best in late winter and spring when the lagoons hold water. Others use the town as a quiet base for the Guadalteba and Guadalhorce reservoirs, the El Chorro gorge and the Caminito del Rey walkway near Ardales, all within a short drive. Antequera and its dolmens are also close. Expect small plazas, local ventas and few crowds.
The inland drive up the Guadalhorce corridor
This is an inland journey, not a coastal one. From the airport you join the A-357, the Guadalhorce dual carriageway, and head north-west past Cártama, Pizarra and Álora, following the river valley away from the sea. The road is fast, modern autovía for most of the way, climbing gently as farmland and olive terraces replace the coastal sprawl. Beyond Ardales the route continues toward the Campillos plain, where the landscape opens out into wide cereal fields. Total driving time is usually around an hour, traffic depending. There are no hairpin mountain passes, but you'll notice the shift from busy coast to open countryside quite quickly. The final approach into town is straightforward on flat, well-signed roads.

Practical advice for this route
Campillos has limited taxi and public transport links back to the airport, so booking the return in advance matters more here than on the coast. Trains do stop at nearby stations on the Bobadilla line, but connections are infrequent and often require a change at Antequera or Bobadilla, so a direct transfer saves considerable time. If your real destination is the Caminito del Rey, tell the driver, as the Ardales and El Chorro access points lie off the same corridor and may suit you better. Petrol stations and shops thin out once you leave the A-357, so stock up before arriving if you're staying at a rural house. In spring the lagoons and surrounding tracks can flood, so wear suitable footwear for birdwatching visits.
