What Calahonda is and who stays there
Calahonda, officially Sitio de Calahonda, is a large residential resort area within Mijas Costa, spread across a hillside between Fuengirola and La Cala de Mijas. It draws long-stay residents and holidaymakers, many of them British and Northern European, plus golfers playing Calahonda Golf and nearby Miraflores and El Chaparral. The coastline includes Playa de Calahonda and Royal Beach, with chiringuitos and a promenade section. The Calahonda commercial centre concentrates bars, restaurants and supermarkets, so many visitors barely move once they arrive. It's busiest in summer and over Easter; the golf crowd peaks in spring and autumn. Neighbouring Riviera del Sol and La Cala de Mijas are a short drive away, making the whole strip walkable-to-drivable for day trips along the coast.
The drive from the airport along the A-7
The route leaves the airport and joins the coastal corridor heading southwest, passing Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Most drivers use the A-7 (the old N-340 coastal road) or the AP-7 toll motorway for the faster middle stretch. It's dual carriageway almost the whole way, with the sea on your left and the Mijas hills on your right. The journey is typically around 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic through Fuengirola, which is the usual bottleneck in summer. The final part is the tricky bit: Calahonda is not a single street but a hillside network of urbanisations reached by several exits off the A-7, and the internal roads climb and twist. Knowing your specific complex or street name matters more here than the word Calahonda alone.

Practical tips for arriving in Calahonda
Give your driver the exact urbanisation name, block and street, not just "Calahonda" — the resort covers a wide hillside and complexes like Calypso, Riviera and El Zoco each have their own entrances, and many share similar-looking gated access points. If you're arriving at a rental with a key-collection office or a lockbox, note that some agencies are down near the commercial centre while the property may be several minutes uphill. Roads inside the urbanisation are narrow and steep, so a larger vehicle may need a specific access route. There's no train station in Calahonda itself; the nearest is in Fuengirola, which is why a door-to-door transfer is genuinely useful here. For late arrivals, confirm whether your complex gate needs a code before the driver reaches it.
