Cádiz sits on a narrow peninsula, so the old town is compact and walkable. The Cathedral's yellow-tiled dome, Torre Tavira and the Mercado Central anchor the centre, while La Viña and El Pópulo are the barrios for tapas and flamenco. Playa de la Caleta lies between two forts inside the old town; Playa Victoria, a long sandy stretch, runs along the newer part of the city and fills with local families in summer. Day-trippers cross the bay to El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar for sherry bodegas and fried fish. February brings the Carnival, one of Spain's largest, when accommodation books out months ahead. Golfers usually head to Chiclana and Novo Sancti Petri, just south.

The route leaves Málaga on the A-7/AP-7 coastal motorway, passing Marbella and Estepona before turning inland near Algeciras. From there the A-381 climbs through the Los Alcornocales cork-oak country toward Medina Sidonia and Jerez, a fast, quiet stretch with gentle hills rather than sharp bends. The final approach follows the A-48 and crosses the bay into Cádiz, either over the Carranza bridge or the taller Constitución de 1812 bridge, giving a clear view of the port and salt marshes. Expect roughly two and a half hours with light traffic. It is motorway almost the whole way, so the only slow section is the last stretch through the old town's narrow one-way streets.

If your accommodation is inside the old town, tell the driver the nearest square or the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, as many streets are pedestrianised or too narrow for a car to reach the door; you may finish the last minutes on foot. During Carnival week the city centre is closed to traffic and drop-off points move to the edge of the old town, so plan extra time. For beach hotels on Playa Victoria or in Chiclana and Novo Sancti Petri, confirm the exact resort entrance, as several complexes share access roads. There are no motorway tolls on the A-381 or A-48. If you are catching the catamaran to El Puerto or Rota, ask to be left near the Estación Marítima at the marina.
