Cádiar sits at around 900 metres in the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, on the Guadalfeo river, and is often called the geographical centre of the Alpujarra. It has the whitewashed houses, flat launa roofs and covered passageways (tinaos) typical of the region's villages. People come for rural tourism, hiking and the local wine and cured meats rather than beaches. The October fair is known for its wine fountain, and the surrounding villages are a big part of any stay: Yegen, where Gerald Brenan wrote 'South from Granada', Mecina Bombarón, Bérchules, Válor and, higher up, Trevélez, famous for its jamón. Most visitors are walkers, cyclists and travellers staying in cortijos and rural hotels such as the nearby Alquería de Morayma.

The route runs east along the A-7 coastal motorway from the airport, passing Nerja, Almuñécar and the tunnels around Salobreña before reaching the Motril area. From there it turns inland and climbs on the A-348, following the Guadalfeo valley up through Órgiva, the main town of the western Alpujarra, and Torvizcón, before continuing to Cádiar. The first two-thirds are fast dual carriageway with sea views; the final section is a two-lane mountain road with steady climbs, bends and changing gradients as you gain altitude. Expect the journey to take a little under three hours. The scenery shifts noticeably from coastline to terraced hillsides and pine and chestnut slopes as you approach the village.

The mountain section beyond Órgiva is winding, so if you or your children are prone to car sickness, sit in the front and keep water handy. Weather at the coast tells you little about Cádiar: at nearly 900 metres it can be cold in winter, and snow occasionally affects the higher passes toward Trevélez, so check conditions if you plan to move between villages. Fuel and larger supermarkets are easier to find around Órgiva than in the smaller villages, so stock up on the way through if your accommodation is remote. Many rural properties sit on unnamed tracks or cortijos outside the village centre, so share a precise pin location and a phone number in advance. Confirm your return pickup the day before, as evening driving on these roads is slow.
