It's also serious olive-oil country, and the birthplace of novelist Juan Valera. Expect a working Andalusian town rather than a resort, busiest in spring and autumn when walking weather is best.

The route leaves the airport and joins the A-45 autovía towards Córdoba, climbing away from the coast past Antequera. This is dual carriageway for most of the way, so the bulk of the journey is straightforward motorway driving through rolling farmland and olive groves. Near Lucena the road narrows onto the A-318, the local road that runs through Lucena and Cabra, and the final stretch is single carriageway with roundabouts and small-town approaches. The terrain shifts from coastal to open inland plateau, then to the hillier edge of the Subbética. Total time is usually around two hours depending on traffic leaving the Málaga metropolitan area. There are service areas along the A-45 if you need a stop.

Because Cabra is inland with no direct rail link from the coast, a door-to-door transfer avoids a change of buses or trains in Lucena or Córdoba. Give your driver the exact street, as the older streets around the Barrio del Cerro are narrow and steep and some can only be approached from certain directions. If your stay involves the Ermita on the Picacho or a rural finca outside town, mention it when booking — the access roads are narrow and worth flagging in advance. Bring what you need for the trip, since shops on the A-318 stretch are limited compared with the coast. For summer arrivals, note that inland temperatures here run higher than in Málaga, so plan for the heat on arrival.
