Bubión sits at around 1,300 metres on the south face of the Sierra Nevada, the middle of the three Poqueira Gorge villages between Pampaneira below and Capileira above. Its steep, narrow lanes, whitewashed houses with flat clay roofs and cylindrical chimneys are Berber in origin. Most visitors are hikers using the village as a base for trails into the gorge and up toward Mulhacén, plus travellers wanting cool mountain air in summer when the coast is hot. You'll find weavers' workshops, small ceramic shops and terrace restaurants serving Alpujarran cured ham and the local plato alpujarreño. It stays busy through spring and autumn walking seasons, and draws day-trippers who combine all three villages in one loop.

The route runs east and inland, not along the coast. From the airport you join the A-7 briefly, then head north on the A-45 toward Granada before turning east on the A-92 toward Guadix. You leave the motorway for Lanjarón, then Órgiva, the market town at the foot of the Alpujarras. From Órgiva the character changes completely: the A-4132 and the local road up to the Poqueira villages is a slow, tightly winding mountain climb with switchbacks and drop-offs, gaining altitude fast. Expect roughly two and a half hours in total. The last twenty minutes are the slowest part, and Bubión's own streets are too narrow and steep for large vehicles to reach every door.

Tell your driver the exact name of your guesthouse and, if you have it, the nearest small square or the church, because many houses are on pedestrian-only lanes where the car will stop at the edge and you'll walk the last stretch with your luggage. Pack light shoes you can carry bags in on cobbles. The temperature at 1,300 metres is markedly cooler than at the airport, especially after dark and outside summer, so keep a layer accessible. There are few shops open late, so arriving with water and snacks helps for evening flights. If you plan to visit Pampaneira and Capileira too, they're minutes apart by road, but parking at the top is limited. Confirm your return pickup time in advance, as the climb back down still takes over two hours to the airport.
