Benarrabá and the Genal Valley
Benarrabá is a small white village in the Serranía de Ronda, set on a hillside above the Genal Valley in the west of Málaga province. It sits among chestnut and cork-oak woodland that turns copper in late autumn — locals and walkers call the area the Bosque de Cobre, and October and November bring photographers and hikers. Most visitors are walkers using the trails down to the Río Genal, day-trippers touring the nearby villages of Gaucín, Algatocín, Jubrique and the art village of Genalguacil, and guests at the small rural hotel in the village. The old core is steep and compact, with narrow streets, a viewpoint over the valley and the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It is quiet, rural and best suited to those wanting mountain scenery rather than the coast.
The drive inland from the coast
The journey runs about 125 km and takes close to two hours. From the airport you follow the A-7/AP-7 coastal corridor southwest, passing Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona, which is fast motorway driving. Near Estepona or Manilva the route turns inland and climbs into the mountains on the A-377 toward Gaucín, then joins the A-369 through the valley near Algatocín before the final approach on the local road down into Benarrabá. The change is noticeable: the last 30–40 minutes are winding, single-carriageway mountain road with steep gradients, tight bends and long valley views. Passengers prone to motion sickness should expect the last stretch to be slow. The road is paved throughout but narrows on the final descent into the village.

Practical advice for this route
Book a door-to-door transfer rather than relying on public transport: bus links into the Genal Valley are infrequent and involve changes, and the last road into Benarrabá is not one you want to navigate at night in a hire car. Tell the driver in advance exactly where your accommodation is — the upper streets of the old village are too narrow and steep for larger vehicles, so you may be dropped at a car park or square and walk the final metres, often uphill with luggage. Pack accordingly with soft bags. Bring layers: at this altitude evenings are cooler than the coast, especially outside summer. Stock up on anything you need in Estepona before the climb, as village shops are small and keep limited hours. Confirm a return pickup time when you arrive, since spontaneous taxis are scarce here.
