What Benaoján is known for
Benaoján sits in the Guadiaro valley in the Serranía de Ronda, about 15 km southwest of Ronda. It's a working village better known for its cured-meat industry — the chorizo and chacinas produced here are sold across the province. Most visitors come for the outdoors: the Cueva de la Pileta, with its prehistoric cave paintings, is reached by a narrow road from the village and must be booked ahead. The Cueva del Gato and its pool, near the lower Estación de Benaoján, draws walkers in warm months. The GR-141 long-distance path passes through, and the railway station on the Algeciras–Bobadilla line makes it a base for hikers and day-trippers rather than a beach or nightlife destination.
The drive from Málaga Airport into the Serranía
The route leaves the airport on the A-7 and heads inland on the A-357 towards Ardales and Campillos, then turns onto the A-367 to climb into Ronda. This is a fast dual-carriageway and open road for most of the way, with the terrain shifting from coastal plain to rolling farmland and finally the limestone country around Ronda. After Ronda the last stretch to Benaoján is on the MA-7401/MA-8401 — a narrow, winding mountain road that drops into the Guadiaro valley, with tight bends and single-lane sections. Expect around an hour and three-quarters. Note that Benaoján village sits high above its own railway station (Estación de Benaoján), and the two are several kilometres apart by road, so confirm which you need.

Practical advice for this route
Give an exact address or landmark when booking: "Benaoján pueblo" and "Estación de Benaoján" are distinct points several kilometres apart, and a rural house may need a phone number for the last approach. The village streets are steep and narrow, so a driver may drop you at a square rather than the door. If you're heading to the Cueva de la Pileta, remember it's a further climb by a small road above the village and visits are by pre-booked guided tour only. There are few shops open late here, so buy supplies in Ronda on the way if you arrive in the evening. The mountain section can be slower in rain or winter fog, so allow extra time for onward train or tour connections.
