The journey leaves the airport on the A-7 motorway heading east along the coast, passing Rincón de la Victoria and the Vélez-Málaga junction. From there it turns inland, following the valley road that traces the Río Vélez and Río Benamargosa up towards the village. The coastal section is fast and straightforward; the change comes once you leave the motorway and the road narrows, running between fruit plantations and low hills before the final approach into Benamargosa. Expect the last few kilometres to be slower and winding, with some tight bends and a couple of village entrances. The whole trip is short by Axarquía standards, roughly 45 to 50 minutes, and the terrain shifts noticeably from busy coast to green agricultural valley in a matter of minutes.

Give your driver the exact address or the name of your rural house, as many properties sit outside the village on the plantation slopes and are reached by unnamed farm tracks; a GPS pin or what3words location saves a lot of searching at the end. The village core has narrow one-way streets where larger vehicles can't easily turn, so it's common to be dropped at a central point rather than at the door. There are limited shops in Benamargosa itself, so if you're self-catering, ask to make a quick stop in Vélez-Málaga on the way, where there are supermarkets. Mobile signal can drop in the valley folds, so download directions in advance. In autumn, be aware the riverbed can flood the low crossing, and drivers may take a longer detour.
