Why people come to Benahavís
Benahavís sits inland from San Pedro de Alcántara, in the hills above the coast, and is known first for its restaurants — the narrow old-town streets around Calle Málaga are packed with them, which is why day-trippers drive up from Marbella and Estepona for lunch or dinner. Golfers make up much of the other traffic, heading to Los Arqueros, Marbella Club Golf Resort, El Higueral or the gated estate of La Zagaleta. Walkers use the Charco de las Mozas natural pools on the Río Guadalmina and the trails along the Guadalmina gorge. The village stays busy through spring and autumn golf season; summer brings families staying in the surrounding urbanisations who come down for the evening.
The drive up from the airport
From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport the route runs west on the A-7/AP-7 coastal motorway past Fuengirola, Marbella and San Pedro de Alcántara — around 60 kilometres of straightforward dual carriageway. The change comes at the end: you leave the motorway near San Pedro or Guadalmina and turn inland onto the MA-7300, a climbing, curving road that follows the Guadalmina valley up to the village. Expect roughly 55 minutes in normal traffic. The final stretch is noticeably twisty, and the old-town core itself is tight and stepped, so drivers usually stop at the village edge rather than pushing into the pedestrian streets. If your stay is in La Zagaleta or a golf urbanisation, the access roads branch off before the village proper.

Practical tips for this route
Give your driver the name of the urbanisation or golf resort, not just "Benahavís" — the municipality is large and spread across the hills, and La Zagaleta, Los Arqueros and the village centre are far apart with different access roads. La Zagaleta in particular is a controlled-entry estate, so have your host's gate details ready. If you're staying in the old town, arrange a meeting point at the village car park near the entrance, as vehicles can't reach most of the lodging directly. The MA-7300 is fine in daylight but dark and winding at night, so allow extra time for evening arrivals. For dinner-only visits, book a return pickup in advance — taxis rarely wait in the village late, and there's no practical public transport back to the coast after hours.
