Most visitors are hikers and day-trippers who book timed walkway tickets, plus families heading to the Embalse del Conde de Guadalhorce and the surrounding reservoirs for swimming and kayaking in summer. The village itself has the Cueva de Ardales, a prehistoric painted cave visited by prior appointment, and the hilltop ruins of the Peña de Ardales. Spring and autumn are the busiest seasons for the Caminito, when the heat is manageable. It is inland Málaga province, not the coast, so expect a quieter, more rural feel than the resorts.

From the airport you leave the coast quickly, joining the A-357 dual carriageway that runs inland past Cártama, Pizarra and Casarabonela through the Guadalhorce valley. This is fast, open road for most of the journey, with farmland and rolling hills rather than sea views. Near Ardales the road narrows: you turn off towards the village on the A-343, and the final approach becomes more winding as you climb into higher ground around the reservoirs. If your destination is the Caminito del Rey entrances, note there are separate access points at El Chorro (south) and near the Ardales end (north), several kilometres apart. The total run is roughly an hour depending on traffic leaving the coastal strip. Passengers usually notice the shift from motorway to twisting country road in the last stretch.

The Caminito del Rey is a one-way linear walk, so where your driver drops you matters. Most walkers start at the northern (Ardales/Guadalhorce) access and finish at El Chorro, then take the shuttle bus back to their car; if you arrive by transfer, arrange your pickup at the correct end to avoid a long wait. Book walkway tickets well ahead, as they sell out weeks in advance in spring and autumn. Bring closed shoes, water and a layer, since the gorge is breezy and there is little shade. The village of Ardales has limited shops, so pick up supplies before leaving the coast if you have specific needs. Mobile coverage in the gorge and around the reservoirs can be patchy, so confirm timings and meeting points with your driver before you set off.
