What Archidona is known for
Archidona sits inland in the north of Málaga province, well away from the coast. Its centrepiece is the Plaza Ochavada, an eight-sided Baroque square finished in the 1780s, ringed by ochre and red buildings. Above the town, on Cerro de la Sierra, stands the Santuario de la Virgen de Gracia, built inside the walls of a former Moorish fortress and mosque, with a horseshoe-arch chapel and long views over the vega. Visitors are mostly Spanish day-trippers and walkers rather than beach tourists, with the Sierra de Archidona and its Hoya de la Camorra drawing hikers. The Lagunas de Archidona, small salt lakes north of town, attract birdwatchers. Nearby are Antequera, Villanueva del Rosario and Villanueva del Trabuco.
The drive north via the A-45 and A-92
The route leaves the airport and joins the A-45 motorway heading inland towards Antequera, climbing steadily away from the coast through the Montes de Málaga corridor. After passing the Antequera area, the road links onto the A-92 towards Granada, and Archidona sits just off this dual carriageway. Almost the entire journey is on fast motorway, so it is smooth and predictable, typically around fifty minutes. The scenery shifts from coastal sprawl to open farmland, olive groves and low sierras. The final approach leaves the A-92 and drops into the town, where streets narrow considerably around the historic centre and the Plaza Ochavada. Drivers usually set down near the edge of the old town rather than inside its tightest lanes.

Practical tips for this route
Archidona's old town is built on a slope with narrow, one-way streets, so give your driver the exact street name and, if possible, a landmark such as the Plaza Ochavada or a specific church; addresses alone can be hard to reach. If you are staying at the Santuario area or a rural house in the sierra, note that the final track may be unpaved. There is little public transport back to the airport, so booking the return in advance is worthwhile, especially on Sundays. Since the town has few large hotels, many visitors stay in casas rurales in the surrounding countryside, which are easier to find in daylight. If you plan to continue to Granada, the A-92 makes Archidona a natural stop rather than a detour.
