Árchez in the Axarquía wine country
Árchez is a small whitewashed village in the Axarquía, tucked into the foothills below the Sierra Tejeda y Almijara. Its landmark is the Alminar de Árchez, a well-preserved Almohad-era minaret in brick, now the bell tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. The village sits on the Ruta del Sol y del Vino, the Muscatel wine route linking it to Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida and Sayalonga. Visitors are mostly walkers, cyclists and travellers exploring inland Málaga away from the coast, plus people renting rural houses in the hills. It's busiest in spring and autumn, when the walking weather is best; summers are hot and quiet, and the surrounding vineyards are harvested in late summer for sweet raisins and wine.
The drive from the airport up into the hills
The journey starts on the A-7 motorway, heading east past Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and the Vélez-Málaga area, which is fast dual carriageway most of the way. After roughly 45 minutes on the coast you turn inland, leaving the motorway near Algarrobo or Torre del Mar and climbing on narrower regional roads through Sayalonga towards Árchez. The final stretch is a winding, single-carriageway climb with tight bends and valley views, so the last 15 minutes feel slower than the distance suggests. Expect around 60–70 minutes in total. Inside the village itself the streets are narrow and steep, and larger vehicles cannot reach every doorway, so the drop-off point may be a short walk from your accommodation.

Practical tips for the Árchez transfer
Send the exact address and, ideally, a pinned location, because rural houses around Árchez, Sayalonga and Cómpeta often sit on unnamed lanes and the village core is pedestrianised in parts. Ask the driver where the practical drop-off point is and be ready to carry luggage a short distance uphill. There are few shops in the village, so consider stopping for supplies in Torre del Mar or Algarrobo on the coast before the climb; a scheduled stop is easier to arrange in a private car than on public transport. Public buses inland are infrequent, which is why a direct transfer is worth it here. If you have an early flight back, book the return with extra time, as the descent through the bends and coastal traffic near Vélez-Málaga can add minutes.
