Alozaina and the Sierra de las Nieves
Alozaina is a white hill village on the western edge of the Guadalhorce valley, on the way up into the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. It sits above olive and citrus terraces, and the local olive harvest is celebrated each autumn with the Fiesta de la Aceituna. The compact old centre runs off the Plaza de la Constitución, with the remains of an old watchtower and steep, narrow lanes that cars can't easily enter. Most people arriving here are walkers heading for trails around Yunquera, Tolox and El Burgo, rural-house tenants, and residents of the surrounding countryside. It's a quiet, inland base rather than a resort town — busiest in spring and autumn when hiking conditions are best, and much calmer than the coast in July and August.
The drive up the Guadalhorce valley
From the airport the route follows the A-357 dual carriageway inland along the Guadalhorce valley, past Cártama and towards Pizarra and Álora. This first stretch is fast, open road with farmland on both sides and the mountains rising ahead. The character changes once you leave the main road for the A-366 towards Ronda, which climbs through Casarabonela before reaching Alozaina. That final section is a two-lane mountain road with a steady series of bends, gaining height as it goes, so the last part of the trip is slower than the map distance suggests. Expect around 55 minutes in normal traffic. The scenery becomes distinctly rural and elevated — olive groves, pine slopes and long valley views rather than coastline.

Practical tips for arriving in Alozaina
Give your driver the exact address or the name of your rural house, since many properties here are on scattered country lanes outside the village rather than in the centre, and some are reached by unpaved tracks. If you're staying inside the old town, be ready to walk the last stretch with your luggage — the lanes off the Plaza de la Constitución are too narrow and steep for a vehicle to reach every door. Stock up on groceries in the valley (Cártama, Pizarra or Coín) before the climb, as shops in the village are small and keep limited hours, closing in the afternoon. Bring layers: at this altitude evenings are cooler than on the coast, especially outside summer. Confirm a pickup time in advance for your return, as taxis are not always waiting locally.
