Alora is a whitewashed town in the Guadalhorce valley, climbing a hillside beneath the ruins of its Arab castle and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. Most visitors arriving here are heading for the Caminito del Rey, the cliffside walkway through the Gaitanes gorge near El Chorro, a short drive further north. Hikers and climbers use Alora and El Chorro as a base, while day-trippers come for the reservoirs and the walk itself. The old town has steep, narrow streets and a Tuesday market. It is agricultural country — citrus, olives and almonds — and much quieter than the coast, drawing walkers in spring and autumn when the gorge is comfortable to visit.

The route leaves the airport on the MA-20/A-7 and quickly turns inland onto the A-357, the main road up the Guadalhorce valley towards Cártama and Pizarra. This is fast dual carriageway for most of the way, following the river through farmland with the mountains ahead. Near Pizarra you leave the main road for the A-343, a slower single-carriageway road that runs through the valley to Alora. The final approach into the town involves a climb and some tight streets in the older upper quarter, so drivers often set down passengers at accessible points rather than the very top. The whole trip is inland and takes around 45 minutes with normal traffic — noticeably shorter than reaching most coastal resorts.

If your real destination is the Caminito del Rey, tell the driver in advance — the walkway entrances at El Chorro and Ardales are another 15–20 minutes beyond Alora town, and the walk is one-directional with separate start and finish points, so booking a return pickup at the correct end saves confusion. For accommodation in Alora's upper old town, share the exact street or a nearby landmark, since some lanes are too narrow for larger vehicles and you may finish on foot. There is little public transport up here in the evenings, so pre-booking your transfer is more reliable than expecting taxis. If you plan to explore the reservoirs or El Chorro during your stay, carry water and sun protection, as facilities are limited away from the town centre.
