Almerimar is a purpose-built marina resort on the coast of El Ejido, in Almería province. Its centre is the Puerto Deportivo, ringed by apartment blocks, waterfront bars and berths for sailing and motor boats, which draws boat owners and long-stay northern European residents, many over winter. Golfers come for the 18-hole Golf Almerimar course beside the harbour. Families settle on the wide sandy beaches either side of the port, while walkers and birdwatchers head to the Punta Entinas-Sabinar reserve, with its salt lagoons and flamingos, just west of town. Nearby you'll find Balerma, the castle at Guardias Viejas and the fishing town of Adra. It's quieter and more low-key than the Costa del Sol, and busiest from Easter through September.

The route runs east on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo for almost the whole way, so it's motorway driving rather than winding coast road. You leave the airport, skirt the eastern edge of Málaga through its tunnels, then pass Nerja, cross into Granada province around Almuñécar and Motril, and continue past Adra into Almería province. The stretch between Nerja and Motril is the most scenic, with viaducts and tunnels through the coastal hills. Beyond Adra the landscape flattens into the plastic greenhouses of El Ejido before you drop down to the coast at Almerimar. Expect roughly two to two and a quarter hours in normal traffic. The final approach leaves the motorway and runs through El Ejido's outskirts before reaching the resort.

Almerimar's addresses can be confusing: the resort is a grid of similar apartment blocks and urbanisations around the marina, with names like the various "edificios" rather than obvious street numbers. Have your exact building name, block and any access-gate code ready, and share the marina side (harbour or golf side) you're staying on, as it saves circling. There are no direct flights into nearby Almería for most visitors, so Málaga is the practical airport despite the distance. Stock up at a supermarket if you arrive late, since resort shops and restaurants wind down out of season. Book a return pickup with buffer time: the drive back to Málaga can slow through the Motril and Nerja section on summer weekends. A private car straight to your door avoids any change at Almería or a taxi from a distant station.
