After leaving the airport you pass Málaga city, then follow the coast past Nerja and Almuñécar, where the road climbs through tunnels and bridges above the sea. Around Motril and the Costa Tropical the terrain becomes more rugged, with greenhouses covering the plains near El Ejido as you approach Almería province. It's a long transfer — usually a little over two hours without stops — but it's dual carriageway the whole way, so it's steady rather than winding. The final approach into Almería drops down towards the port and city centre. If your accommodation is in Cabo de Gata or San José, add extra time for the smaller roads beyond the motorway exit.

Because this is one of the longest transfers from Málaga airport, it's worth confirming your exact drop-off address in advance, especially in Cabo de Gata, where the natural park has restricted vehicle access and some beaches limit cars in summer. San José itself is reachable, but villages like Las Negras or Agua Amarga are further along narrow roads. If you're staying in Almería's old town, note that many streets around the Cathedral and Alcazaba are pedestrianised or very tight, so the driver may set you down at the nearest accessible point. Consider whether flying into Almería airport directly suits you better for some trips, but Málaga has far more flight connections. Bring water and a comfortable plan for a two-hour-plus drive, particularly with children.
