Alcaucín at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda
Alcaucín is a white village in the Axarquía, sitting on the lower slopes of the Sierra de Tejeda below La Maroma, the highest peak in Málaga province at just over 2,000 metres. It draws hikers heading into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, and walkers use the village as a starting point for the climb to La Maroma and routes towards the Boquete de Zafarraya. Below it lies the Viñuela reservoir, and the ruins of the Castillo de Zalia stand nearby. The centre is a maze of steep, narrow lanes around the church and the fountain of five spouts. Many residents are foreign homeowners spread across rural fincas, so a good number of arrivals are people coming to their own houses rather than hotels.
The drive inland from the coast to Alcaucín
The route runs east from the airport along the A-7 coastal motorway, passing Rincón de la Victoria and the turnoffs for Torre del Mar before cutting inland near Vélez-Málaga. From there the road climbs through the Axarquía on the A-356 towards the Viñuela reservoir, then branches onto smaller roads up to Alcaucín. The first two-thirds are fast, straightforward motorway driving; the character changes once you leave the coast, with rising ground, olive and almond terraces, and reservoir views. The final approach into the village is genuinely steep and winding, with tight bends and narrow streets in the old centre. The whole journey is usually under an hour, though it feels longer than the distance suggests because of the mountain section at the end.
Practical tips for arriving in Alcaucín
Many properties here are rural fincas outside the village core, often reached by unpaved or single-track lanes without clear house numbers. Send your driver a pinned location or GPS coordinates in advance rather than just a street name — postal addresses in the campo are unreliable. If you're staying inside the old town, be aware that a car often can't reach the door; agree a drop-off point near the church or a main square and expect a short walk with luggage over steep, cobbled streets. There's no supermarket chain in the village itself, so if you're self-catering, consider a stop in Vélez-Málaga on the way up. Evenings and winter mornings can be noticeably cooler than the coast given the altitude, which surprises travellers arriving from the beach resorts.
