Alcalá la Real sits in the Sierra Sur de Jaén, on the old frontier line between the kingdoms of Jaén, Granada and Córdoba. The town is dominated by the Fortaleza de la Mota, a hilltop fortress complex with the Alcázar and the ruined Iglesia Mayor Abacial, reached by a steep climb above the centre. Below, the Palacio Abacial and the arcaded streets around Calle Real form the working heart of the town. Most visitors are day-trippers and history-minded travellers, plus people passing through the olive-growing country between Granada and Córdoba on the N-432. Autumn and spring suit walking the fortress and surrounding hills; summers are hot and dry inland. The area is serious olive-oil territory, and local mills and the weekly market are part of the appeal.

This is an inland route that leaves the coast behind entirely. From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport the driver heads north on the A-45 towards Antequera, climbing away from the sea through the hills. Beyond Antequera the road links onto the A-92 corridor towards Granada, then turns north again on the A-333 up towards Alcalá la Real. The journey runs roughly 135 kilometres and takes around an hour and three-quarters in normal traffic. Most of it is fast dual carriageway, but the final stretch is single-carriageway road through olive-covered hills, with some curves and gradients as you approach the town. You'll notice the landscape shift from coastal sprawl to open farmland and rows of olive trees, and the temperature is often noticeably different from the coast.

Because Alcalá la Real is well inland, plan around the length of the trip rather than the coast's usual short hops: build in a stop if you're travelling with children, as there are service areas along the A-45 and A-92 but fewer once you leave the main roads. The old-town streets around the fortress are narrow and steep, so agree a practical drop-off point in the lower town rather than expecting the vehicle to reach the Alcázar itself. If you're continuing to villages nearby such as Frailes or Castillo de Locubín, mention it when booking so the driver plans the route. Winter mornings can bring fog and frost on the inland roads, so allow extra time for early flights. Cash is handy for small mills and bars in the surrounding countryside, where cards aren't always taken.
