Albox and the Almanzora Valley
Albox sits inland in Almería province, in the Almanzora Valley, well away from the coast. Its Thursday street market is one of the largest in the region and draws people from the surrounding villages of Arboleas, Zurgena, Cantoria and Partaloa. In town, the Fuente del Marqués spring and park is the usual meeting point, and the Nuestra Señora del Saliente sanctuary in the hills above is a local landmark and pilgrimage site. A large British and Northern European community lives here and in the scattered cortijos across the countryside, so many arrivals are residents or people visiting property. The pace is agricultural rather than touristic, built around citrus and the marble quarries of nearby Macael.
The drive east from Málaga into Almería
The route runs almost entirely on the A-7 coastal motorway heading east, past Motril and the Costa Tropical, then across the mountainous stretch above Almería city. After Almería you turn inland onto the A-334, which follows the Almanzora Valley through Huércal-Overa's junction and on towards Albox. It is a long run — expect close to three hours — but nearly all of it is dual carriageway, so the ride is steady. The scenery shifts from sea views to dry inland hills and orchard-covered valley floor. The final approach into Albox and out to the surrounding cortijos involves narrower rural roads, so having an exact address or GPS pin for country properties matters more than the town name.

Planning your transfer to Albox
Because this is an inland long-haul route, confirm the exact drop-off in advance. Rural cortijos and urbanisations around Arboleas and Zurgena often have no clear street numbers, so send a Google Maps pin, the plot or property name, and a phone number the driver can call on arrival. Almería Airport is much closer to Albox, but it has far fewer flights, which is why many travellers still fly into Málaga — worth weighing when booking flights. There are few services on the A-334 stretch, so plan a stop near Almería if travelling with children. If you arrive for the Thursday market, note that central streets close and parking around the Fuente del Marqués fills early.
