Adra sits on the Almería coast, just past the boundary with Granada province, and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Spain, with Phoenician and later sugar-cane and lead-smelting history behind it. Today it works as a fishing port with an active marina and a daily fish auction. Long grey-sand beaches run either side of town — Playa de San Nicolás, Playa del Censo and Playa Sirena Loca. Just east lie the Albufera de Adra lagoons, a protected wetland reserve where flamingos and other waterbirds gather. Visitors are mainly Spanish families and residents rather than package tourists, plus birdwatchers heading for the lagoons and day-trippers exploring the greenhouse plains around El Ejido. Summer brings the busiest beach season and the town fiestas.

The route follows the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo almost the whole way east, roughly 185 kilometres and around two hours depending on traffic. After leaving the airport you skirt the eastern Costa del Sol, then the road climbs and dips through the cliffs and tunnels around La Herradura and Almuñécar before dropping to Motril and Salobreña. Past Motril the motorway crosses the plastic-greenhouse country of the Campo de Dalías, so the last stretch feels more agricultural than coastal. The final approach into Adra leaves the motorway and passes through the edge of town to reach the port and beaches. It is a smooth, well-graded road throughout, with the most scenic section being the mountainous coast between Nerja and Motril.

Adra straddles two autonomous communities' influence: it is in Almería province but closer in feel and services to eastern Granada. If you are continuing to villages inland — Berja, Dalías or Albuñol — confirm the drop-off point, as the mountain roads beyond the coast are narrow and add time. In town, the port and Paseo Marítimo have straightforward access, but the older streets behind the church are tight, so ask the driver to set you down on a main road if your accommodation is in the historic core. There are no motorway services in Adra itself; the last reliable stops are around Motril, so plan any break there. For the lagoons, note the reserve is a short drive east of the centre and has limited parking, which matters if you plan onward trips.
