Machico is one of the closest towns to the airport, which sits at Santa Cruz just to the west. The route runs east along the VR1 expressway, passing through a series of tunnels cut into the cliffs before the road drops toward Machico bay. It's almost entirely dual carriageway, so the ride is smooth and quick — usually only around ten to fifteen minutes with light traffic. The final descent gives you a view down over the town and beach. Once off the expressway, the approach into the old town narrows, with tight one-way streets near the seafront and river; drivers will usually drop you at the nearest accessible point to your accommodation rather than squeezing right up to the door.

Because the drive is so short, a private transfer makes most sense if you land late — Machico has limited taxis waiting at night, and the airport bus (Aerobus / SAM lines) is timetabled rather than frequent. Tell your driver in advance if you're staying up the hillside neighbourhoods like Ribeira Seca or Pico do Facho, as those roads climb steeply and are hard to reach on foot with luggage. If you plan to hike Ponta de São Lourenço, note the trailhead is beyond Caniçal, a further short drive east, and there's no shade and no water on the route, so buy supplies in Machico first. For the beach, the Moroccan sand gets busy on summer weekends with locals from across the island.
