If you land on a large aircraft, the walk from arrivals to the pickup point is short and covered, so meeting outside is simple. Madeira weather can differ sharply between the airport and the city, and cloud often sits over Monte while the coast stays clear, so don't judge your day from the runway. If you're heading onward to Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão or the west, mention it when booking, as those routes leave the VR1 at different exits. Motion-sensitive passengers should note the tunnels and gentle curves on the expressway.
