The airport is at Santa Cruz, east of Funchal, so the whole run to Calheta crosses the island from east to west along the VR1 expressway. You skirt above Funchal through a long series of tunnels and viaducts, pass Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava, then continue on the newer expressway sections toward Calheta. It's fast, modern road almost the entire way, with sea views opening between tunnels. The last stretch drops down toward the coast and marina on shorter, more winding local roads. Expect roughly 55 kilometres and around 55 minutes in normal traffic; the only slow point is usually the Funchal bypass at rush hour.

Many stays here are in hillside villas and apartments above the beach and marina, reached by steep, narrow lanes — share your exact address and any access notes in advance, since satnav often stops at the main road. If you're hiking Rabaçal or the 25 Fontes, note those trailheads are up in the mountains at Paúl da Serra, a further climb inland from Calheta, so plan onward transport separately. The southwest coast is noticeably sunnier and warmer than the north, but mountain cloud can roll in fast on the levadas, so bring layers. Supermarkets and restaurants cluster near the marina; the beach has showers and lifeguards in season. Book a return transfer early if you fly out at peak times.
