Val Thorens sits at 2,300 metres, the highest ski resort in Europe and the top of the Belleville valley in Savoie. It's part of the Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world, connected to Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel. The resort is purpose-built and largely pedestrian, so cars are left in covered car parks at the entrance while guests walk or take shuttles to their accommodation. Most visitors arrive in winter for skiing, from late November into May, drawn by the snow-sure altitude and glacier runs. Families, ski groups and nightlife-minded travellers all come; the après-ski scene around La Folie Douce and the central Place de Caron is well known. Summer brings hikers and mountain bikers, though many businesses close between seasons.

The route runs mostly on motorway. From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry you follow the A43 east past Chambéry towards Albertville, then continue into the Tarentaise valley on the A430 and N90 towards Moûtiers. This first stretch is fast and straightforward, covering the bulk of the distance. At Moûtiers the character changes completely: you turn onto the D915 and then the D117, climbing the Belleville valley through Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and past Les Menuires. The final section is a continuous series of switchbacks gaining serious altitude, and in winter it is often snow-covered with sections requiring chains or winter tyres. Expect around three hours in good conditions, considerably more during Saturday changeover days when the Tarentaise fills with ski traffic. The last half hour is slow and winding by nature.

Book with your accommodation address in hand, because Val Thorens has several entrances and multiple car parks (Roc de Péclet, Caron and others) serving different parts of the resort; drop-offs are usually at the parking level, not the chalet door. Saturdays are the busiest arrival day of the week, so an early or mid-week flight avoids the worst Tarentaise queues. Pack a warm layer and grippy footwear in your hand luggage: even a short walk from the car park across snow is cold and slippery. If you land late, note that resort shuttles and reception desks keep limited hours. Confirm whether your driver uses winter tyres or carries chains in deep-winter conditions. Finally, altitude gain is real here—drink water and take the first evening gently before hitting the slopes.
