The villages that make up Serre Chevalier
Serre Chevalier isn't a single resort but a chain of villages strung along the Guisane valley between Briançon and the Col du Lautaret. The main bases are Chantemerle (Serre Che 1350), Villeneuve-la-Salle (1400) and Le Monêtier-les-Bains (1500), with Saint-Chaffrey in between and Briançon anchoring the lower end. The linked ski area runs to around 2,800m and is a winter draw for skiers who want long tree-lined runs and the thermal baths at Le Monêtier. In summer the same valley fills with road cyclists tackling the Lautaret and Galibier, hikers heading into the Écrins, and families using Briançon's UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications as a base. Each village has its own lift access and parking, so your drop-off point matters.
The drive over the Col du Lautaret
From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry the route runs on motorway for the first half: the A43 and A48 toward Grenoble, skirting the city before the N85 and N91 turn east into the mountains. The character changes sharply after Vizille and Bourg-d'Oisans, where the road climbs past La Grave and up to the Col du Lautaret at just over 2,000m. This final stretch is a sustained mountain road with long climbs, switchbacks and open high-alpine terrain, then a steady descent into Le Monêtier and down the Guisane valley to the other villages. Expect around four hours in normal conditions. In winter the Lautaret is kept open but can require chains or temporary closures after heavy snow; the descent toward the resort is slower when the road is icy.
Planning your transfer to the right village
Tell your driver exactly which base you're staying in — Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Le Monêtier or Briançon — and the name of the chalet or residence, since the villages are several kilometres apart and the correct one saves backtracking along the valley road. In winter, carry your ski boots and essentials in the cabin rather than the hold in case the Lautaret closes and plans shift. The Lautaret has no fuel or services at the top, so for a late arrival expect a long unlit mountain stretch. Flight delays matter here: the final climb is slow, so a late evening landing can mean arriving after resort shops close — buy any lift passes or groceries online or arrange them in advance. Summer cyclists should confirm bike carriage when booking.
