Méribel and its villages in the Three Valleys
Méribel sits in the Belleville-facing Allues valley and is the central hub of Les Trois Vallées, linked by lift to Courchevel and Val Thorens. It is really several settlements: Méribel Centre at around 1,450m, higher Méribel-Mottaret (the snowiest base), quieter Méribel Village, and old Les Allues down the road. Chalet-style building rules keep the wood-and-stone look consistent. The resort was developed from the late 1930s and has long drawn British skiers, so English is widely spoken. Families use the Altiport and nursery slopes; stronger skiers head to Mottaret for quick access to the full ski area. In summer the Méribel altitude golf course, bike trails and hiking off the Saulire and Tougnète lifts take over.
The drive up the Tarentaise valley
From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry the route runs on the A43 toward Chambéry, then the A430 down to Albertville, where the mountains close in. From there it follows the Tarentaise valley floor along the Isère to Moûtiers, the market town that serves all of the Three Valleys. The last stretch is the part you feel: a climbing departmental road from Moûtiers with a series of switchbacks up through Les Allues to Méribel, around 18km that can take 30–40 minutes alone. Expect motorway for most of the journey and winding mountain road for the final climb. Total driving time is usually under three hours, but Saturday changeover days in peak winter can add significantly as the Moûtiers approach becomes congested.
Practical tips for arriving in Méribel
Give your driver the exact village and chalet or hotel name, not just "Méribel": Centre, Mottaret, Village and Les Allues are spread across different levels and entrances, and Mottaret in particular adds a good ten minutes on the climb. Many chalets are on pedestrianised or restricted lanes, so agree the nearest vehicle drop-off in advance and be ready for a short walk with your bags. In winter, carry boots and a warm layer in the cabin even if Lyon is mild; conditions change completely once you leave Moûtiers. Saturdays are the busy resort changeover, so an early or late slot moves more smoothly. If you land late, note that mountain roads may be snow-clearing overnight, which can slow the final ascent.
