Lyon splits into distinct areas depending on why you've come. Vieux Lyon, at the foot of Fourvière hill, draws visitors for its Renaissance streets and the covered traboules passageways; the funicular runs up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Roman theatres. The Presqu'île, the tongue of land between the Rhône and Saône, holds Place Bellecour, the shops around Rue de la République and the Opéra. Croix-Rousse, the old silk-weavers' hill, is steeper and quieter. Business travellers usually head to Part-Dieu, with its station and towers, while Confluence to the south has newer museums and offices. Bouchons, the traditional Lyonnais restaurants, cluster mostly in Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île.

The airport sits at Colombier-Saugnieu, roughly 27 km east of the city, out among flat farmland. The route is motorway almost the whole way: the A432 links to the A43, which runs west toward Lyon and feeds onto the Boulevard Périphérique Laurent Bonnevay ring road. From there you exit toward whichever district you need. In free-flowing conditions it's around 35 minutes, but the eastern approach and the ring road clog badly at morning and evening rush hours, and the final stretch into the Presqu'île involves quays along the Rhône and one-way streets. There's little to see en route until the city itself appears; the Rhônexpress tram shadows part of this corridor but stops only at Part-Dieu.

If your accommodation is in Vieux Lyon or on the Croix-Rousse slopes, tell the driver in advance: many streets there are narrow, cobbled or pedestrianised, and a car often can't reach the door, so agree on the nearest drop-off point. For Part-Dieu, the Rhônexpress tram is fast and direct, but a private car makes more sense with luggage, small children or a group. Traffic on the périphérique is the main variable, so allow extra time for a departure flight during weekday peaks. During the Fête des Lumières in early December the Presqu'île centre closes to traffic and drop-offs shift to the edges. The airport terminals are compact, making the meeting point easy to find on arrival.
