Les Arcs is built as a series of stacked, car-reduced villages: Arc 1600 above Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Arc 1800 (the largest, with Charvet, Villards and Charmettoger), Arc 1950 built as a pedestrian ski-in ski-out hamlet, and Arc 2000 at the top. Peisey-Vallandry sits lower and quieter, with the traditional village of Peisey-Nancroix and the Vallandry and Plan-Peisey gateways. Together they form part of the Paradiski area, linked to La Plagne by the Vanoise Express cable car. Skiers come for the long tree-lined runs and the glacier terrain above Arc 2000; families favour Peisey-Vallandry and Arc 1950 for their calmer, chalet-style layout. In summer, hikers use the Aiguille Rouge lift and the trails around the Vanoise National Park.

The route leaves Lyon-Saint-Exupéry on the A43 motorway heading east, passing Chambéry and reaching Albertville in around an hour and a half. From there the road becomes the N90, which climbs steadily up the Tarentaise valley through Moûtiers, Aime and finally Bourg-Saint-Maurice. This stretch is dual carriageway for much of the way but narrows and winds as the valley tightens. The final climb depends on your village: the hairpin road up to Arc 1600, 1800 or 2000, or the turning off toward Plan-Peisey and Vallandry. Expect the last twenty to thirty minutes to be slow, tight switchbacks, especially above the valley floor. Total driving time is usually around three hours, longer on winter Saturdays when the whole valley changes over resort bookings.

Tell the driver exactly which level or hamlet you need — Arc 1600, 1800, 1950, 2000, Plan-Peisey or Vallandry — because they are reached by different access roads and some, like Arc 1950, are pedestrian zones where vehicles stop at a drop-off point and you walk or use luggage assistance to your residence. If you're staying in Arc 1600, the Bourg-Saint-Maurice funicular is an alternative but it doesn't run around the clock. In winter, carry chains-ready footwear and expect the upper roads to be snow-covered; a 4x4 or chained vehicle matters on the final climb. Saturday changeover days bring heavy traffic through Moûtiers and Aime, so an early pickup saves time. Confirm your resort entrance and residence name in advance, as signage within each village can be sparse.
