What Davos is and who travels there
Davos sits in the Graubünden canton of eastern Switzerland at roughly 1,560 metres, split into two linked districts, Davos Platz and Davos Dorf, strung along the Promenade. In winter skiers head for the Parsenn above Davos Dorf and the Jakobshorn above Davos Platz; the Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament fills the town between Christmas and New Year. In January the Congress Centre hosts the World Economic Forum, which closes streets and tightens security. Summer brings hikers and road cyclists to the Flüela and Sertig valleys and to Lake Davos. The Kirchner Museum holds work by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and the funicular to Schatzalp climbs to the old sanatorium that inspired Thomas Mann. Nearby Klosters, down the valley, is a quieter alternative base.
The drive from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry across Switzerland
This is a long motorway journey, around 470 km and roughly five hours before traffic or weather. From the airport the route runs east toward Geneva, crosses the border and picks up the Swiss motorway network past Lausanne and Bern, or north of the lake toward Zürich, before heading to Sargans and Landquart in the Rhine valley. There the character changes: you leave the motorway and climb the Prättigau valley on the main road through Klosters, a steadier, winding ascent into the mountains for the final stretch into Davos Dorf and Davos Platz. In winter the lower valleys can be clear while the top is snowbound, so the last half hour is the slowest. The Flüela Pass, the alternative eastern approach, closes in winter.
Practical points for this route
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so carry a passport or ID card; the Schengen crossing is usually quick but checks do happen. Swiss motorways require an annual vignette, which a professional operator will already have. Currency is the Swiss franc, though cards are accepted almost everywhere in Davos. Because the trip takes several hours, agree one or two stops in advance; service areas near Geneva or in the Rhine valley are the sensible choices before the climb. For ski trips, say how much equipment you are bringing so the vehicle fits boot bags and skis. During WEF week in January, give the exact hotel and expect access controls and diversions on the Promenade. Winter travel means setting off with margin for snow on the final valley road.
