Crans-Montana sits on a sunny plateau in the Swiss Valais, high above the town of Sierre in the Rhône valley. It is really two linked villages, Crans and Montana, sharing one ski area that reaches up to the Plaine Morte glacier. Winter brings skiers to pistes around Cry d'Er and Les Violettes; summer draws golfers and hikers. The Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre hosts the Omega European Masters each autumn. Families walk the shore of the Étang Grenon lake, and the resort centre around Rue du Prado is lined with boutiques and restaurants. Note that despite the France label, the resort lies in Switzerland, so you cross the border on the way.

The route runs mostly on motorway. From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry you take the A42/A40 towards Geneva, cross the French-Swiss border, then follow the A9 motorway east along the Rhône valley past Lausanne, Montreux and Sion towards Sierre. That valley stretch is fast and flat, hemmed in by vineyards and high peaks. The character changes at the end: from Sierre you leave the motorway and climb a winding mountain road of roughly fifteen kilometres, with a steady series of hairpins gaining over a thousand metres to reach the plateau. Expect around three and a half hours in good conditions. The final ascent is the part passengers notice most, especially in snow or low cloud.

Because you cross into Switzerland, carry a passport or national ID card; checks at the border are occasional but do happen. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc, and the motorway requires an annual vignette, which a professional transfer vehicle will already have. The climb from Sierre can be slow in heavy winter snowfall, so allow extra time for early-morning flights and tell your driver which village you need, as Crans and Montana have separate access roads and parking is tight near the resort centre. Many chalets and apartments sit on narrow lanes, so share the exact address and any entrance instructions in advance.
