Briancon, the Vauban town above the Serre Chevalier valley
Briancon is the highest town in France, and its walled Cité Vauban — with ramparts, the Collégiale church and the Fort du Château — is UNESCO-listed. Below and up the Guisane valley sits the Serre Chevalier ski area, strung across four main bases: Briançon (1200), Chantemerle (1350), Villeneuve-la-Salle (1400) and Le Monêtier-les-Bains (1500). Skiers and snowboarders fill the resort from December to April, drawn by the long tree-lined runs and the thermal baths at Le Monêtier. In summer the same valley turns to mountain biking, hiking into the Écrins National Park and road cycling over the Col du Lautaret and Col du Galibier. Tell your driver which base you need — the villages are several kilometres apart along the N91.
The drive over the Col du Lautaret
From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry the route runs south on the A43 and A48 toward Grenoble, then follows the A51 and the N85 (Route Napoléon) before turning onto the N91 up the Romanche valley. The final stretch is the mountain section: the N91 climbs through Le Bourg-d'Oisans, past the Barrage du Chambon and over the Col du Lautaret at 2,058 m before descending into the Guisane valley to the Serre Chevalier villages and Briançon. Expect roughly three hours. The first two-thirds is motorway and fast road; the last part is a steady mountain climb with tunnels, switchbacks and exposed sections. In winter the Lautaret is kept open but can require chains or brief closures after heavy snow.
Planning your transfer to Serre Chevalier
Book a vehicle sized for ski or bike bags — the valley bases all involve roof-box space in high season. Give the exact base and accommodation name, since Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier each have separate access roads off the N91 and resort buildings can be identical-looking. In winter, allow extra time around the Col du Lautaret, where snow clearing or chain checks can add delays; an early-morning airport arrival often means an easier pass. If the Lautaret closes, the alternative is a much longer detour via Gap. Carry something for altitude and motion sickness, as the climb gains height quickly. For late flights, confirm your driver tracks the flight, because the mountain leg is not somewhere to wait roadside after dark.
