What Alpe du Grand Serre is and who goes there
Alpe du Grand Serre sits above the village of La Morte, in the Matheysine area south of Grenoble, on the flank of the Taillefer massif. It is a compact, family-run ski area with runs between roughly 1,350 and 2,180 metres, known for being affordable and uncrowded rather than a big-name resort. In winter it draws families, Grenoble locals and beginners who want short lift queues; in summer, walkers head for the Taillefer lakes and the GR50. The resort base is small, with its lifts, ski school and a handful of chalets and apartments clustered together at La Morte itself. Compared with the big Isère stations like Les Deux Alpes, it stays low-key and quiet midweek, which is exactly why regulars keep returning.
The drive from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry through Grenoble and La Mure
The route runs south-east on the A43 and A48 motorways to Grenoble, the fast part of the journey covering most of the distance. Past Grenoble you join the N85, the old Route Napoléon, climbing onto the Matheysine plateau towards La Mure. The last section leaves the main road for the D114 up to La Morte, a narrower mountain road with tighter bends as you gain altitude to the resort base. Expect around two hours fifteen in good conditions. The scenery shifts from the flat Rhône corridor to the Belledonne and Taillefer peaks once you clear Grenoble. The final climb is the slowest part, especially in snow, so the overall time depends far more on the mountain stretch than on the motorway run.
Practical tips for this transfer in winter and summer
In winter the D114 up to La Morte can hold snow and ice long after the motorway is clear, so confirm your pick-up time with a margin and travel with a driver equipped for the mountain. Because the resort base is small, give the exact name of your chalet or apartment residence rather than just "Alpe du Grand Serre" — the lift station and accommodation are not all at one address. There is little in the way of late shopping once you arrive, so buy supplies in La Mure or Grenoble on the way up. For summer walkers, confirm whether you want to be dropped at the resort base or lower in La Morte village. If your flight lands late, factor in that the final climb is slower after dark.
