The bottleneck to expect is around Metz, where the A31 is one of the busiest sections in the region and can slow at rush hour. Nancy's own approach brings you off the motorway into ordinary city streets; the historic core around Place Stanislas is partly pedestrianised, so drop-offs are made at the nearest accessible point rather than on the square itself.

Remember you are crossing an international border into France, so carry your ID or passport even though there are no routine checks. If you're staying in the Ville Vieille or near Place Stanislas, tell the driver the exact street: the pedestrian zones mean the closest vehicle access can be a short walk from your hotel. For train onward travel, Nancy-Ville station sits west of the centre and is an easy drop-off. Metz makes a logical stop if you want to break the trip. Timing matters most around Metz — a mid-morning or early-afternoon departure avoids the worst of the A31 congestion. Place Stanislas is worth seeing after dark for its lighting, and in summer the square hosts an evening sound-and-light show, so an evening arrival can be well timed.
