The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From Findel you head onto the A1 and A3 towards the French border, then join the A31 southbound through Thionville and on to Metz. It is flat, open valley driving along the Moselle, with little of the winding terrain you get elsewhere in the region. Under normal conditions the journey is around an hour. The main variable is traffic: the A31 between the border and Thionville carries heavy cross-border commuter flows, and it can slow noticeably on weekday mornings and evenings. The final stretch leaves the motorway for Metz's boulevards; the historic centre around the cathedral has restricted, narrow streets, so drop-offs are usually at the nearest accessible point.

Time your transfer to avoid the cross-border rush. Tens of thousands commute daily between Luxembourg and the Thionville–Metz axis, so an early-afternoon or mid-morning departure is far smoother than 7–9am or 5–7pm. Remember you are crossing into France, so carry ID; Luxembourg and France use the same currency and no border checks, but bring a passport if you are travelling from outside the Schengen area. If your destination is the cathedral quarter, Place Saint-Louis or Outre-Seille, expect a short walk from the drop-off as vehicle access is limited. For the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Amphithéâtre district beside Gare de Metz-Ville is easy to reach directly. Winter arrivals during the Christmas market should allow extra time for city-centre congestion.
