What Zurich offers when you arrive
Zurich sits at the northern end of its lake, split by the Limmat river. Most visitors head for the Altstadt on both banks, with the Grossmünster, Fraumünster and the narrow lanes of the Niederdorf. Bahnhofstrasse runs from the main station to Bürkliplatz and the lake, and is the city's banking and shopping spine. Business travellers fill the hotels near Paradeplatz and the financial district; families and summer visitors use the Zürichhorn and Mythenquai lakeside areas, and the lake boats from Bürkliplatz. In winter, people pass through on the way to ski resorts in Graubünden and central Switzerland. The trendier scene sits in Zürich-West, around the old industrial Viadukt arches and Prime Tower.
The drive north over the Gotthard
The route follows the A2 motorway almost the entire way, climbing out of the Ticino valley past Bellinzona and into the Alps. The key point is the Gotthard road tunnel: nearly 17 kilometres under the mountain, and the single biggest variable in your journey time. On peak weekends, holidays and Friday afternoons, queues at the southern portal near Airolo can add an hour or more. After the tunnel the road descends through Uri along Lake Lucerne's arm, past Altdorf, then joins the A4/A14 corridor via Zug toward Zurich. Expect roughly 210 kilometres and around two and a half to three hours in clear conditions. The scenery shifts from palm-lined Ticino to high alpine passes to the flatter Mittelland, so it is a genuinely varied drive rather than motorway monotony.
Planning the transfer sensibly
Because the Gotthard tunnel dictates timing, tell your driver your onward plans: a train from Zurich HB, a lakeside hotel, or a connection at Zurich Airport (a further 15–20 minutes north of the city). If you are travelling on a summer Saturday or during Swiss holiday periods, build in a generous buffer or ask about the alternative San Bernardino route (A13), which sometimes flows better when Gotthard is jammed. In winter, the motorway is well maintained but the approaches can see snow, so allow extra time. Zurich's old town has restricted and metered access, so confirm a precise drop-off address — many Niederdorf lanes are pedestrian-only. Motorway travel in Switzerland requires the annual vignette, which a professional transfer vehicle already carries, so that is one less thing to arrange.
