The most direct route leaves Lugano and crosses into Italy near Lake Como, running through Menaggio and up the Val Chiavenna to Chiavenna. From there the road climbs the Maloja Pass, a series of tight hairpin bends that lift you back into Switzerland and onto the Engadine plateau. The final stretch is gentler, following the chain of lakes past Sils, Silvaplana and Champfèr before reaching St Moritz. Expect roughly two to two and a quarter hours. The switchbacks near Maloja are the part passengers notice most; if you are prone to motion sickness, sit in front. Because the route dips into Italy, you cross an international border in each direction, so keep your passport or ID accessible.

The Maloja Pass road is open year-round but can slow in heavy snow; a private car with winter tyres is far more reliable than juggling connections. St Moritz-Dorf has steep, narrow streets and several hotels with awkward drop-off points, so give the exact hotel name rather than just the resort. If your accommodation is in St Moritz-Bad or lakeside, mention it, as the two districts are a few minutes apart. Confirm whether you have skis, boards or golf clubs when booking so the right vehicle is sent. In winter, allow extra time for the pass and for road checks at the border. The alternative Julier Pass route via Chur is longer but sometimes used when Maloja conditions are poor.
