It is an inland drive, not a coastal one: you pass suburban districts and a stretch of small Malcantone lake before the ground rises towards the centre. The final approach into Lugano involves narrow, steeply pitched streets, and the old town core around Via Nassa and Piazza della Riforma is largely pedestrian, so vehicles stop at the edges. Traffic can bunch at the Cassarate and Paradiso junctions during morning and evening peaks and on summer weekends.

Lugano Airport handles limited scheduled and general aviation, so confirm your flight is actually landing here and not at Milan Malpensa, which many airlines label as serving the region — a Malpensa transfer is a much longer, cross-border trip. Tell your driver the exact hotel or street, since the pedestrian old town means the closest drop-off may be a short walk with luggage over cobbles. If your hotel is in Paradiso or up in Castagnola, mention it: the hillside access roads are tight. Switzerland uses the franc, not the euro, and many lakefront cafés take cards. For onward lake boats, the main landing stages are at the central quay by Piazza Manzoni, close to most waterfront hotels.
