What Sesimbra is known for
Sesimbra is a working fishing town on the southern edge of the Setúbal Peninsula, backed by the ridges of the Arrábida Natural Park. The seafront runs along Praia do Ouro and Praia da California, both sheltered south-facing beaches that fill with Lisbon families in July and August. Above town sits the Moorish castle, and west along the coast the road climbs to Cabo Espichel, with its clifftop sanctuary and lighthouse. The harbour (Porto de Abrigo) still lands swordfish and octopus, which drive the reputation of the seafront restaurants. Divers and hikers come for the Arrábida cliffs and the hidden cove of Ribeira do Cavalo, reached on foot. Out of season it stays quiet, mostly residents and weekend day-trippers.
The drive from the airport to Sesimbra
The route leaves Humberto Delgado Airport, crosses Lisbon to one of the Tagus bridges — usually the 25 de Abril — and picks up the A2 motorway heading south. Almost the whole journey is motorway, so it moves quickly outside rush hour, covering roughly 48 kilometres in around 50 minutes. After the bridge the landscape opens into the pine and cork country of the peninsula. You leave the A2 for the N378, which runs straight down toward the coast. The last stretch descends into town on a curving road, with the sea appearing ahead as you drop toward the harbour. If you cross via the 25 de Abril bridge you get a clear view back over Lisbon; the Vasco da Gama bridge is sometimes used to avoid congestion but adds distance.

Practical tips for arriving in Sesimbra
Sesimbra's old core near the beach is a grid of narrow one-way streets, and parking there is tight in summer; give your driver the exact street or hotel name, as the seafront and the upper town (Quinta do Conde direction) are quite different areas. If you're staying west toward Cabo Espichel or in the Arrábida park, tell the driver in advance — those roads are slower and not all satnavs handle them well. Public transport back to Lisbon is by bus (TST), not train, and it can be slow, so a return transfer is often the practical choice for a day out. Bring cash if you plan to eat at the smaller harbour restaurants. In August, ask to be dropped near your accommodation rather than the beachfront, which is closed to through traffic at peak times.
