What Cascais is and who goes there
Cascais is a coastal town at the western end of the Lisbon commuter line, once a fishing port and royal summer retreat, now a base for beach days, sailing and golf. The marina and the old town around Rua Frederico Arouca fill with day-trippers in summer, while families favour the sheltered beaches of Praia da Rainha and Praia da Conceição close to the centre. Nearby, Guincho beach draws surfers and windsurfers, and Boca do Inferno is a short walk along the coast. Golfers head to Quinta da Marinha and Oitavos Dunes. Cascais also works as a gateway for Sintra and the Cabo da Roca cliffs. Many residents are foreign professionals and retirees, so English is widely spoken and the town stays busy year-round, not just in high season.
The drive from Humberto Delgado Airport
From the airport the driver crosses Lisbon and picks up the A5 motorway, the main west corridor towards Cascais. This is a fast, straightforward route that runs inland through Oeiras and past the Carcavelos exit before ending at Cascais, usually around 35 to 45 minutes when traffic is light. The A5 avoids the seafront entirely, so the journey is motorway most of the way rather than coastal. If you ask, drivers can instead take the Marginal (N6), which hugs the estuary and Atlantic through Estoril, past the casino and the beaches; it is slower but scenic. Rush-hour traffic on the A5 between the airport and Lisbon's western edge can add time in the morning and late afternoon, and the final approach into central Cascais narrows near the marina and old town.
Practical advice for this route
Much of central Cascais around the marina and old town is pedestrianised or has restricted access, so tell your driver the specific hotel or street rather than just "Cascais centre"; several accommodations are best reached from Avenida Marginal or Avenida 25 de Abril rather than the pedestrian core. If you are staying in Estoril, Monte Estoril or Quinta da Marinha, name it exactly, as these are separate stops before the town centre. For summer beach visits, ask to use the Marginal in daylight so you see the coast, but expect it to be slow on hot weekends. Guincho and Cabo da Roca sit beyond the town on winding roads with no motorway, so factor extra time if that is your final destination. Trains run frequently from Cascais back to Lisbon's Cais do Sodré if you prefer rail for later trips.
