The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From Humberto Delgado Airport you join the Segunda Circular or the northern ring, then pick up the A5 (Auto-estrada da Costa do Sol), the main corridor west toward Cascais. Traffic permitting, the drive covers roughly 25 kilometres in about 35 minutes. You leave the A5 around the Oeiras or Carcavelos exits, then drop down through residential streets toward the coast. The final stretch is ordinary suburban road rather than winding mountain lanes. If your driver takes the coastal Marginal (N6) instead, you'll pass the river-front stretch through Algés and Oeiras with views over the Tagus estuary, though it's slower. Expect the heaviest delays during weekday rush hours and on summer weekends when the whole coast heads for the beach.

Give your driver a specific address or landmark: Carcavelos spreads over a hillside and "the beach" alone isn't enough, since the seafront has several access points and parking near Praia de Carcavelos is tight in summer. If you're staying near Nova SBE, name the campus, as the newer streets around it can confuse GPS. The A5 is a tolled motorway; a private transfer includes this, unlike some airport buses. For beach days, note that afternoon westerly winds pick up here, so morning arrivals are calmer. The Cascais railway line is a cheap, frequent way to reach Lisbon or Cascais afterwards, but the station is a walk uphill from parts of the beach. Have luggage ready to unload quickly, as some residential streets have little room to stop.
