Maastricht sits on both banks of the Maas, with the old town on the west side around the Vrijthof, the large square framed by the Sint-Servaasbasiliek and the Sint-Janskerk. Nearby stand the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek and Boekhandel Dominicanen, a bookshop inside a former Gothic church. Across the river, the Wyck district holds independent shops and cafés near the station. South of the centre, the Sint-Pietersberg caves and fort draw walkers, while the Bonnefanten museum sits on the east bank. The city fills up during the TEFAF art fair in March and February carnival, and its university keeps the bars and terraces busy year-round with students and weekend visitors from Belgium and Germany.

Liège Airport sits at Bierset, west of Liège, so the transfer heads north and picks up the A2/E25 motorway that runs straight up to Maastricht. It is a short run, roughly 33 kilometres and about 35 minutes in normal traffic, almost entirely on dual carriageway with no tolls. You cross the Belgian–Dutch border on the way, but there are no checks and the euro is used on both sides, so nothing interrupts the journey. Entering the city you cross the Maas by one of the bridges, such as the Kennedybrug or Wilhelminabrug. The final stretch into the centre narrows into one-way streets and pedestrian zones around the Vrijthof, so the last few minutes are slower than the motorway suggests.

The historic centre around the Vrijthof and Stokstraat is largely pedestrianised, so ask your driver to set the exact drop-off at your hotel entrance; many small hotels sit on streets closed to through traffic. If you are staying near the station, the Wyck side is easier for vehicle access. Book ahead for arrivals during TEFAF in March and the February carnival, when the city and its roads are far busier than usual. Because the airport is small and mainly handles cargo and charter flights, taxi ranks can be thin, so a pre-arranged transfer is more reliable than waiting on the spot. Keep some coins or a card for parking if you plan onward day trips to Valkenburg or the caves.
