What Protaras is known for
Protaras sits on the southeast coast in the Famagusta district, built along a strip of sheltered bays. Fig Tree Bay is the main draw, with shallow, calm water that suits families with young children. Sunrise Beach, Vrissiana and Kalamies are within walking distance of most hotels along the resort strip. Above the town, the whitewashed Profitis Ilias church sits on a rocky outcrop reached by a long flight of steps. To the south, Konnos Bay and the Cape Greco headland offer sea caves and clifftop walking trails. Paralimni is the working town inland, where residents live and shop. Protaras fills with families and couples from June to September; it is far quieter than neighbouring Ayia Napa's nightlife scene.
The drive along the A3 motorway
The route runs almost entirely on the A3 motorway, which leaves Larnaca Airport and follows the coast eastward past Larnaca bay. The road is fast, well surfaced dual carriageway with little to slow you down until the final stretch. After passing the Dhekelia area and the salt lakes, the motorway curves inland and then approaches the Paralimni–Protaras area. The last few kilometres leave the motorway for local roads that thread between the resort's several hotel clusters, so the final approach is slower and involves a few roundabouts. The total distance is around 70 kilometres and the journey usually takes about 50 minutes in normal traffic. In July and August the resort roads back up in the late afternoon as day-trippers return from the beaches.
Practical tips for this transfer
Protaras hotels are spread across a long strip, so give the exact hotel or villa name when booking — a driver dropping at Fig Tree Bay is a different point from one at Kapparis or Pernera, and getting it right avoids a long detour. Many self-catering villas are on unnamed lanes, so a pin location or nearby landmark helps. If you land late, note that the resort is well connected by motorway even at night, unlike some mountain destinations. Larnaca Airport is the closer of Cyprus's two airports for Protaras; arriving at Paphos means a much longer drive across the island. Stock up on water and beach supplies at Paralimni's supermarkets, which are cheaper than the shops along the tourist strip. Bring sun protection, as shade is limited on the bays.
