What Pernera is like as a resort
Pernera sits on the coast just north of Protaras, in the Famagusta (Ammochostos) district, and works as a quieter, family-focused base close to the busier Protaras strip. Its small sandy coves — Pernera Beach, Kalamies Beach, Louma Beach and Sirena Bay — are calm and shallow, which is why couples and families with young children book here rather than in Ayia Napa. Most visitors come between May and October for the swimming and the string of tavernas along the seafront path. Fig Tree Bay in Protaras is a short drive south, and Cape Greco National Forest Park, with its sea caves and coastal trails, is close for walkers. Ayia Napa's nightlife is roughly fifteen minutes away when you want it, but stays out of earshot in Pernera itself.
The drive from Larnaca Airport to Pernera
The journey covers around 78 km and usually takes about an hour. You leave the airport, join the A3 motorway and follow it east along the coast toward Ayia Napa and Paralimni. Almost the whole run is fast dual carriageway, flat and open, with salt-lake and low scrubland scenery rather than mountains. The pace only changes near the end, when you exit for the Paralimni–Protaras area and move onto local roads through the resort. Pernera itself is a spread of hotels, villa complexes and apartment blocks along and just back from the shore, so the final few minutes involve slower residential streets while the driver finds your specific address. Traffic is light most of the year but thickens on summer weekends around the Protaras junctions.
Practical tips for this route
Give the exact name of your hotel or villa complex when booking, not just "Pernera" — the resort blends into Protaras and Kapparis, and several properties share similar names on adjacent streets. Many complexes sit on one-way loops or lanes with restricted vehicle access, so tell the driver if there is a specific gate or reception entrance. There is no train or direct public bus from the airport, and the local bus network (routes run by OSEA around Paralimni and Protaras) does not connect efficiently to Larnaca, which makes a private transfer the practical choice, especially on late arrivals. Carry water for the drive in summer, keep swimwear accessible if you plan to head straight to the beach, and confirm your return pickup time the day before — summer motorway traffic near Ayia Napa can add time.
