What Ayia Napa is known for
Ayia Napa sits on Cyprus's southeastern tip and draws two very different crowds. Families and beach-goers head for Nissi Beach and Makronissos Beach, both wide stretches of pale sand with shallow water, busiest from June to September. The area around the harbour and the Ayia Napa Monastery in the town centre is the older core, while Ayia Napa Marina is the newer development with berths and waterfront restaurants. Younger visitors come for the clubs on the streets behind the main square. To the east, Cape Greco (Cavo Greco) national park offers sea caves and coastal walking paths, and the neighbouring resort of Protaras with Fig Tree Bay is a short drive away. Spring and autumn suit walkers; peak summer is for the beaches.
The drive along the A3 motorway
The route is almost entirely motorway, so it is fast and straightforward. Leaving Larnaca Airport you join the A3, which runs east across flat, largely open country past the salt lakes and around the outskirts of the resort strip. There are no mountains and no winding sections until the very end. As you approach Ayia Napa the motorway feeds into local roads, and the last stretch through the resort can slow down: the town has a dense grid of hotel access roads and one-way streets, and in high summer traffic near the centre and Nissi Avenue builds up. Total driving time is usually around 45 minutes when roads are clear. If your hotel is toward Cape Greco or Protaras, the final approach adds a few extra minutes past the town.
Practical tips for this transfer
Give your driver the exact hotel or apartment name, not just "Ayia Napa", because the resort spreads over several kilometres from Makronissos in the west to the harbour and marina in the centre, and access roads differ. Many Nissi Beach hotels have entrances set back from the main avenue, so a pin location helps. Summer arrivals late at night are common with the flight schedules into Larnaca, and a pre-booked transfer avoids waiting for a taxi at peak times. If you plan day trips to Cape Greco or Protaras, note that public transport thins out in the evening, so keep that in mind when choosing accommodation. Bring water and sunscreen in your hand luggage — the walk from many hotels to the beach is short but exposed, and midday heat from June to August is intense.
