Selfoss sits on the Ölfusá, the river you cross on the town's landmark bridge, and it is the main service town of the Árborg area in South Iceland. The rebuilt town centre, Miðbær Selfoss, opened in 2021 as a cluster of historic Icelandic timber houses recreated as cafés and shops. Kjörís ice cream is made here, and chess fans visit Bobby Fischer's grave at Laugardælir church just outside town. Most people stay in Selfoss to reach the Golden Circle — Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss — or to drive the South Coast toward Seljalandsfoss and Vík. Nearby you also have the greenhouse town of Hveragerði and the coastal villages of Eyrarbakka and Stokkseyri, plus a local golf course.

The route runs about 90 kilometres and takes roughly an hour and five minutes. You leave the airport on Reykjanesbraut, the dual carriageway crossing the flat lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula, then join Route 1, the Ring Road, before Reykjavík. From there the road climbs onto Hellisheiði, a high, open heath where you pass the geothermal plant at Hellisheiðarvirkjun with its steam plumes and pipelines. The road then descends steeply into Hveragerði, and from there it is flat farmland the rest of the way to Selfoss, ending at the bridge over the Ölfusá. It is a fast, mostly two-lane drive with no narrow streets until you reach the town centre.

The one variable on this route is the Hellisheiði pass. In winter it is exposed to wind and snow and is occasionally closed or restricted during storms, so check road.is (the Icelandic Road Administration) before you set off; a delay here is weather, not the driver. Selfoss is a practical base if your itinerary is the Golden Circle and South Coast, because you avoid backtracking through Reykjavík each day. Supermarkets, fuel and a swimming pool are all in town, useful if you arrive late — many services keep long hours but not 24-hour. If you plan early Geysir or Gullfoss starts, arrange your pickup time accordingly, since those sites are a further 60–90 minutes northeast of Selfoss.
