The first stretch crosses the Reykjanes peninsula's open lava fields, dark moss-covered rock with almost no trees and few buildings, which can feel stark in low light. You'll pass the town of Njarðvík and the aluminium plant at Straumsvík, then the suburbs of Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær before reaching Reykjavík itself. The road is mostly flat and fast, hugging the coastline on the right with Faxaflói bay in view on clear days. There are no mountain passes and no winding sections, so the journey is straightforward. Total driving time is usually around 45 minutes, longer in snow or strong crosswinds, which are common on this exposed stretch.

If you want to visit the Blue Lagoon, do it on the way in or out, since it lies just off Route 41 near Grindavík rather than in Reykjavík — mention it when booking so the driver plans the detour and you avoid a second trip. Note that volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula has occasionally closed roads near Grindavík, so check current conditions. Weather changes fast here: strong winds can make car doors hard to control, so hold them firmly. Many central Reykjavík hotels sit on narrow one-way streets around Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur where large vehicles can't stop directly, so your driver may drop you a short walk away. Have your exact accommodation address ready, as similarly named guesthouses are common. Daylight is minimal in December and January, so expect the whole drive in darkness.
