What Grindavik is and who goes there
Grindavik is a fishing town on the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula, built around one of Iceland's busiest harbours. The working marina still lands cod and other catch, and the town's economy has long revolved around the sea. Most visitors come because Grindavik sits beside the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, a few minutes north on Route 43. Others reach it for the Reykjanes UNESCO Geopark, the Hópsnes lighthouse and shipwreck trail on the peninsula tip, Gunnuhver hot springs, and the coastal hiking. Note that Grindavik has faced repeated volcanic activity and evacuations near the Sundhnúkur crater row since late 2023, so access and open businesses change; check current conditions before travelling.
The drive south on Route 43
The route leaves the airport on Reykjanesbraut (Route 41) briefly, then turns south onto Grindavíkurvegur (Route 43), the single main road that runs down to the coast. The whole trip covers roughly 23 kilometres and takes about 20-25 minutes in normal conditions. The terrain is flat, open lava field for most of the way, moss-covered rock with almost no trees and few buildings until you approach the Blue Lagoon turnoff. Steam plumes from the Svartsengi power plant are visible on the right. The final stretch drops gently toward the sea and the harbour. In winter this exposed corridor catches strong crosswinds and blowing snow, and the road may close on short notice during storms or volcanic activity.
Practical advice for this transfer
Because the Blue Lagoon lies directly on Route 43 between the airport and town, many travellers ask their driver to stop there first; if you plan this, book your lagoon time slot in advance and confirm the stop when arranging the transfer, since luggage storage at the lagoon is limited. Grindavik itself has few shops and restaurants, and opening hours are reduced outside summer, so buy essentials before arriving. Check road status on road.is and the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is) before departure, as Route 43 has been closed at times due to eruptions and evacuation orders. Confirm your accommodation is actually operating, since some businesses in Grindavik have suspended service. A private transfer is more reliable here than public buses, which serve the route infrequently.
