Nearly everyone arriving in Oświęcim comes for the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, split across two sites: Auschwitz I in the town itself and Auschwitz II-Birkenau about 3 km away in the village of Brzezinka. Most visitors are day-trippers and school groups, with heavier numbers from spring through autumn. Beyond the memorial, the town has its own quiet history: the medieval Oświęcim Castle above the Soła river, the market square (Rynek Główny), and the Auschwitz Jewish Center with the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot synagogue, the only one to survive in the town. Entry to the museum is free but requires a booked, timed entry slot, and from spring to autumn a guided tour is mandatory during peak hours.

Katowice Airport sits at Pyrzowice, north of the city, while Oświęcim lies to the southwest, so the route crosses the whole Silesian conurbation. The typical path runs south on the S1 expressway past Katowice and Tychy, then west on regional roads such as the DK44 toward Oświęcim, covering roughly 73 km in about 70 minutes when traffic is light. The terrain is flat inland country, industrial around Tychy and then more open farmland closer to the Soła valley. Traffic through the Katowice agglomeration in morning and late-afternoon rush hours can add noticeable time. The final approach into Oświęcim is on ordinary town roads, with the museum car parks on ulica Więźniów Oświęcimia signposted well before you arrive.

Book your museum entry slot online well before you fly, then set your pickup so you arrive 30-45 minutes before that time; security screening at Auschwitz I resembles an airport check and queues build in summer. The two sites are 3 km apart with a free shuttle bus running between them, but timings can be tight, so budget at least 3.5 hours on the ground for both. Large bags are not allowed inside and lockers are limited, so travel light or keep luggage with your driver. If you have a late flight out of Katowice, allow a generous margin back for Silesian rush-hour traffic. Bring water in summer and warm layers in winter, as much of the Birkenau site is outdoors and exposed.
