What St Anton im Montafon is and who goes there
St Anton im Montafon is a small municipality at the lower end of the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, close to Bludenz — not to be confused with St Anton am Arlberg, which is a separate ski resort. It sits near the valley mouth below the Rätikon and Verwall ranges, with neighbouring villages Schruns, Tschagguns and Bartholomäberg a short drive up the valley. Summer visitors come for hiking and the Montafon trail network; winter guests use it as a quiet base near the Silvretta Montafon and Golm ski areas. It draws families and walkers rather than a nightlife crowd, and many stays are in guesthouses and holiday apartments. The village keeps a residential, working-farm character rather than a resort feel.
The drive from Innsbruck Airport through the Arlberg
From Innsbruck Airport the route runs west on the A12 inntal motorway, then joins the S16 Arlberg road. Depending on conditions the driver either uses the Arlberg road tunnel or, in good weather, the pass over Sankt Christoph and St Anton am Arlberg. The road descends to Bludenz, where it meets the A14, and then turns into the Montafon valley on the L188 towards Schruns. Most of the journey is fast motorway and tunnel; the final stretch into the valley is a two-lane road along the ill river. Allow extra time in winter, when the Arlberg can see snow, chains checks or short closures. The scenery shifts from the broad inn valley to tighter alpine terrain as you approach Montafon.
Practical notes for this transfer
Give your driver the full address including "im Montafon" and the postcode (6771), because sat-navs and booking systems frequently confuse it with St Anton am Arlberg an hour away. Confirm whether your accommodation is in the valley-floor village or on the higher hamlets around Bartholomäberg, where lanes are narrow and steep. In winter carry ski gear counts, as a larger vehicle may be needed, and plan for slower Arlberg driving after fresh snow. The nearest train station is Bludenz, useful as a fallback if a connection is missed. Shops and services are limited in the village itself, so for larger supermarkets Bludenz is the closest option on the way in. If you arrive late, arrange key collection in advance, as many guesthouses do not staff a front desk around the clock.
